OCBC Cycle Singapore 2012

Fast becoming one of the most popular sports events in Singapore, OCBC Cycle Singapore 2012 was run on the first weekend in March attracting more than 11,000 participants over the 3 days. The cycling fiesta is a combination of  pro events and a range of distance challenges that engage Singapore’s cycling community.

Race timing was contracted to Blue Chip Timing who timed the mass participation events using the ULTRA8 (RFID’s UHF timing system). Based on the success of this system at OCBC Malaysia late last year, Blue Chip employed a combination of the low profile ULTRA mats that are rapidly gaining popularity for cycling events, and the side read antennas to capture start and finish times.

RFID Americas Conference 2012

“Florida was amazing” is pretty much the summation of the 2012 RFID Race Timing Conference held between the 26th and the 28th of January 2012. Conference participants were treated to the latest innovations and trends in the timing world set on Florida’s spectacular coast.

Held at Deerfield Beach Resort, this was the perfect location for the  launch of the new ULTRATAG. Our USA agent Al Harding stole the show with his graphic demonstration of the ULTRATAG being read whilst fully immersed in a glass of water. This spectacle was a real attention grabber with the assembled crowd, highlighting the possibilities for triathlon, mud runs and multi-sport events in general. Using a combination of side read antenna and the ULTRATAG timers quickly identified that this is the UHF solution to the water issue.

Through the formal sessions the Pro-timers attending were captivated by a range of stimulating presentations ranging from an insightful presentation by Andrew Peterson on the future direction of  RFID race timing through to the brilliantly practical presentation on “Effective strategies for building your race timing business” from our UK agent Stuart Steele.

Needless to say the informal networking that occurred during the breaks and at the end of each day ensured that new relationships were developed between timers from all parts of the country. The open conversations that resulted in businesses sharing their “tricks of the trade” was not only invaluable to those assembled but illustrated a true camaraderie between timers using RFID Race Timing equipment.

RFID RTS at Tour Down Under

Merckx at Bupa Challenge Ride 2012ULTRA was used for the first time at the 2012 BUPA Challenge Ride yesterday at Tanunda (South Australia) with over 7000 bike riders taking on Stage 4 of the Tour Down Under prior to the worlds best cyclists finishing the 130km stage in the afternoon. With 4 separate start lines, two finish lines and three mid way splits, the ULTRA System provided reatime tracking of the cyclists for organisers and emergency services. The disposable UHF tags meant no backlogs with recovering transponders and the low profile ULTRAMAT ensured near 100% read rates and safety for the fast finishing road bikes. The highlight was 66 year old Tour de France legend Eddy Merckx (pictured) starting and then riding the shorter 33km ride in front of 600 fellow riders.

Tour de Bintan (Bintan, Indonesia)

Some 800 cyclists trekked to Bintan, a one hour catamaran ride from Singapore, for the Tour de Bintan which took place from November 11-13 in relatively hot and humid conditions. The ride past traditional fishing villages, dense lush green forests, and beautiful unspoiled beaches included three stages over a total distance of 265Km. BlueChip Timing timed the event with the ULTRA system. The ULTRA mats again proved successfully that they are the number one choice for cycling events.

Dear Friends and Partners in the timing world,

The holiday season is just around the corner and a successful year is drawing to a close. RFID Timing is not only celebrating the festive season but a great year as the ULTRA has continued to be the choice of timers large and small all over the globe.

The neat part of it all is with every new unit we make the RFID Timing world grows. Whether it is timing walks, runs, pedals, swims, skis, or paddles – we are all working together, side-by-side as partners.

To top off a great year we are launching our new website with this newsletter. We are also looking to kick off 2012 with a bang with the Americas Race Timing Conference at the end of January. The event has garnered extensive interest in the last few months, and we are excited to meet our American partners face-to-face.

I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Mr Genco Jin of Sydex (Beijing) Science and Development Co. Ltd. as our new China Agent. With this new partnership we look forward to seeing the ULTRA grow in popularity throughout the China region.

RFID at the races

Our ULTRA System has gained hugely in popularity over the last year so it is no coincidence that it was used in each of the highlighted events for this month:

The Santos Great Bike Ride for Charity (Perth, Australia):

On November 20, over 3,000 cyclists donned their helmets and pedalled in support of three different charities in the Santos Great Bike Ride for Charity. The Great Bike Ride, established in 2004 and taking place a stone’s throw from RFID Timing headquarters, is one of Perth’s most popular cycling events. Participants of the 10km, 53km, and 106km rides raised significant and vital funds for the Horizon House, Hope for Children and the Heart Foundation. One of the largest bike events ever to use a UHF system, the Great Bike Ride was reliably timed by Blue Chip Timing with the ULTRA System.

Raising an impressive sum of over $475,000 AUD, the event had 9,100 finishers whose times were all captured without exception by Tomato Timing using the ULTRA System. CEO Andrew Peterson was on course to see first-hand the smooth running of the event and the successful capture of race times.
