Wave starts — the gun

A wave is a gun. Every entry in it is timed from that moment, and reads before it are ignored.

A race with two starts — men and women, or category by category — is two waves.

Setting one

On the website: Race setup, the Wave starts card. Give the wave a name and the moment it starts.

The start is the local wall clock the readers are on. Not UTC. It is the same clock a chip read carries, and that is what makes the two comparable.

Seconds count. Times are measured from this moment, so a gun a minute out puts everybody in that wave a minute out.

Anybody in no wave

They are timed from the race window opening instead. That is almost never what you want, which is why the count of people in no wave is shown rather than left for you to notice.

Recording the gun on the day

At the event, Podium PC and Podium Mobile can stamp the gun as it happens rather than typing it in beforehand. A gun recorded that way goes onto the wave it belongs to.

• Podium PC: the Scoring tab, Gun, then press Now as the field goes. Then Save. No Scoring tab? Tick Advanced settings on Settings.
• Podium Mobile: the By hand screen has a Wave start key. Press it as the gun goes. It sits apart from the number keys on purpose, so a thumb aiming for a digit cannot hit it.

Whoever presses it should be watching the gun, not the screen. The press is the time.

Nothing is timed without one

If Podium says "No gun has been set for this race, so nothing can be timed", this is what is missing. Every elapsed time is measured from the gun, so without one there is nothing to measure from. See Nothing is scoring at all.

Everybody in one wave is out by the same amount

The gun is wrong, not the boxes. Correct the wave start and score again — it is one number and it moves everybody in that wave together.

That is a different thing from a box clock being wrong. If the people out by the same amount are the ones who crossed one particular mat, rather than everybody in one wave, it is the box. See Everybody's time is out by the same amount.
