A category is any class an entry is scored in — an age band, a grade, a division.

Two kinds
- By age — worked out from the date of birth. Give it a youngest and an oldest age.
- Assigned — somebody puts people in it. Use this for anything that is not age: grades, divisions, members and visitors.
Age is measured on the day the event says
That was set when the event was created: age on race day or age at 31 December. It is a property of the event, so all its races agree.
Gender sits inside a category, not beside it
Results within a category are split by gender. A category is not a gender — do not make "Male 40-49" and "Female 40-49" as two categories. Make the age band, and the split happens.
Assign
Adding an age band does not backfill the people already entered. An entry taken from now on goes into its band as it is entered; Assign on a band brings the entries already in into line with it.
Run it after you import a start list, and after you change a band's ages.
Putting a lot of people in one at once
Under Import a list, hand out numbers, place by age there is Category, in bulk. Choose the race, optionally narrow to one gender, choose the category, and press Count before Go — it tells you how many it will move before it moves them.
Withdrawn entrants are never swept in. Leaving the category empty takes a group out of their category instead.
Somebody is in the wrong category
Open the entrant. A name, date of birth or gender can move which category they are scored in, and the results are worked out again next time they are read.
