Dear Friends and Partners in the timing world,

Winter is on our doorstep in Australia, while the hot summer months are just around the corner for our friends and partners in the Northern Hemisphere. Wherever you are, we wish you a great season of achievement and fulfillment.

As always, we are happy to bring you information on events that have made use of our customer-acclaimed systems – whether in the mountains of northern Spain, the shores of Lake Michigan, or along our beaches Down Under.

While keeping in touch digitally is great, we look forward to meeting our partners up close and in person at our conferences. Our European conference will take place in London in September, and our US conference will convene in January 2012 in Florida (information below).

We look forward to hearing from you.

Andrew Peterson

A selection of our recent events

RFID Timing Systems world-class technology was deployed at numerous events in May and June, and we present a handful here:

Durban SPAR Women’s 10km/5km (Durban, South Africa):

On June 19, over 13,500 runners took part in the 22nd Durban SPAR Women’s 10/5KM event. The event was completed by 10,320 participants who were treated to a gentle sea breeze at their backs as they ran along the beachfront. Over 6,800 women lined up for the 10km with an almost equal number for the 5km fun run.  The event was timed with the HDD System, including red mats customized to match the branding of our timer, Mr. Price.

Bayshore Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K (Traverse City, Michigan)

The 29th Annual Traverse City Bayshore Marathon took place on May 28, with 6,500 runners participating in a marathon, half-marathon, and 10K event. Bayshore is a flat course that runs along the shores of Lake Michigan. Throughout the race, runners have the crystal blue waters of Lake Michigan on one side and Traverse City’s famous cherry trees and orchards on the other. Running Fit timed the event in damp conditions using the Ultra System (see below).

HBF Run for Reason (Perth, Australia):

On May 22, over 13,750 people joined to run, walk, jog, and stroll in the Act-Belong-Commit 14km and 4.5km along the scenic event route. Run for Reason is a community event bringing together people of various ages and levels of fitness, all of whom choose their own reason to run -- whether that reason is achieving fitness, a personal or family cause, or supporting one of six chronic disease charity partners. The event was timed by blueChip Timing using the Ultra Timing System.

How cheap can tags go?

We found a great article on the manufacturing cost of UHF tags written by Louis Sirico of RFID.net which can be seen here. It is amazing what value is out there at the moment when buying even moderate numbers of tags from vendors. The wet inlay (adhesive backed tags on a roll) of quality tags from Alien or UPM is typically between 13 and 17 US cents. With fierce competition between the tag manufacturers and the growing millions of tags being produced, we should see pricing remain low for years to come. The best part of the deal for our Ultra Timing System users is that they can tap into these savings on tags by using any quality Gen 2 UHF tag on the market today. Why pay $1 for the same tags and have your point of source regulated by your hardware supplier?
